Ascoli Piceno is a wonderful Medieval city in the Marche, among the most important ones in Italy. With its towers and bell towers, enveloped in the golden travertine, the city is surrounded on three sides by the rivers Tronto and Castellano. Ancient capital of the Piceni, conquered by the Romans in 286 BC, the city has been for many years dominated by the Barbarians, by the Frankish, by Frederic II and Francesco Sforza, who in 1482 instituted a cruel dictatorship. It is told that Alarico, the King of the Visigoths, enchanted by the beauty of the city and conscious of its strategic value, gave up to destroy it. With Fermo, Ascoli was, up to 1860, the state capital of the Marche.
