The Piceno

The Piceno lands are in the southern part of the Marche and are included between the rivers Aso and Tronto. The territory is mostly hilly but has the highest percentage of mounty areas of the whole Region. Indeed it hosts the highest mount, the Vettore (2.476 m) and other mountains, such as the Mount Ascensione (1.108 m), some of the most important ones in the Appenninis. The main feature is the variety of landscapes that goes from the sandy beaches of the Adriatic to the Appennini, the Sibillini and the Laga Mounts, with peak that are een more than 2.000 meters high. In the middle, the landscape is dominated by sweet hills that are surrounded by amazing Medieval villages.

Grottammare

Once known as "Cuprae Fanum" because close to the Tesino river rised a temple devoted to the goddess Cupra, who preserved fertility. According to the present village, the early news about Grottammare dated back to the VII century. In the IX century there were still the fortress on the mount where rises the Castle: the ancient walls and the Tower were built to defend the harbor from the Saracens' invasions. Only in 1783 the inhabitants started to built their houses along the coast, due to the numerous landslides. Here, the 12th of October, Vittorio Emanuele II and a commission of Neapolitan notables...

Ascoli Piceno

Ascoli Piceno is a wonderful Medieval city in the Marche, among the most important ones in Italy. With its towers and bell towers, enveloped in the golden travertine, the city is surrounded on three sides by the rivers Tronto and Castellano. Ancient capital of the Piceni, conquered by the Romans in 286 BC, the city has been for many years dominated by the Barbarians, by the Frankish, by Frederic II and Francesco Sforza, who in 1482 instituted a cruel dictatorship. It is told that Alarico, the King of the Visigoths, enchanted by the beauty of the city and conscious of its strategic value, gave up to destroy it. With Fermo, Ascoli was, up to 1860, the state capital of the Marche.

San Benedetto del Tronto

San Benedetto del Tronto, coastal city in the province of Ascoli Piceno is, with its 47.139 inhabitants, the second most populated city. At the South, one can find the Tronto river, that divides the Region from the Abruzzo. The historical center of the city, known as "the old Village", rises on a peak close to the beach, while the modern city center, that is called "Marina" and is crossed by the river Albula, spreads along the coast. San Benedetto del Tronto shares a border at the North with Grottammare, with wich it represents a unique big city center that almost goes up to the Tesino river. S. Benedetto del Tronto, with Ripatransone and Montalto, is an episcopal seat. The city developed above all in the XX century thanks to two resources: the maritime fishing and the summer tourism.

Visiting the Monti Sibillini National Park is a unique occasion to go back to the past. The experience one will live will be really unforgettable for any visitor. The Monti Sibillini National Park includes the highest mounty group of the umbro-marchigiani Appennini and its highest peak, the Vettore Mount (2.479 meters asl) while a lot of its villages are spread out between the Umbria and the Marche.

Spring and summer are the best seasons to have a full immersion into the nature, to deeply breath fresh air, forget the city stress and tone up body and soul. How?
